The Big C is an independent television show produced by Sony Pictures Television for broadcast as an original series on the Showtime cable network. The show has garnered critical acclaim and stars Golden Globe winner, Laura Linney, as Cathy Jamison, a teacher, suburban woman and housewife who becomes diagnosed with stage four cancer. The show features a balance of truth and drama with measured humor and sarcasm, to provide an insightful and alternative view into a dire medical situation. The Big C also features Oliver Platt as Cathy's husband; John Benjamin Hickey and Gabriel Basso. The show also features guest stars such as: Academy Award nominee, Gabourey Sidibe in a recurring role; Cynthia Nixon, Hugh Dancy and Parker Posey. The Big C was created by executive producer, Darlene Hunt, and Jenny Bicks, as well as actress and star of the show, Laura Linney, Vivian Cannon and Neal H. Moritz. Other producers of the series include Mark Kunerth, Michael Engler, Cara DiPaolo and Melanie Marnich. The story begins with Cathy Jamison finding out about her cancer diagnosis, which she first decides to hide from friends and family. She finally decides to share the news with family and to pursue experimental medical treatment to conquer the illness sensibly. Cathy bonds with fellow patient, Lee (played by Hugh Dancy), but is not certain of the new doctor, oncologist Atticus Sherman (played by Alan Alda). Her son, Adam (played by Gabriel Basso) begins a strange friendship with an older woman (played by Parker Posey). Her student, Andrea, (played by Gabourey Sidibe) begins dating a co-worker named Myk (played by Boyd Hollbrook). Sean (played by John Benjamin Hickey) starts living in Marlene's (played by Phyllis Somerville) old home, as he prepares for fatherhood as a result of Rebecca's pregnancy (played by Cynthia Nixon). The Season 2 finale featured the Jameson family, along with Andrea on a Puerto Rican holiday.The trip turns tragic when Cathy gets entangled in a fishing net while scuba diving. She is set adrift at sea from the dive boat. After the initial shock, she finds that Angel, her new companion (played by Michael Ray Escamilla) is unable to speak English. She comes to some surprising revelations while sharing her thoughts out loud. The series went into production in early 2012 for its third season, to produce 10 new episodes, scheduled to air on the Showtime Network in 2012's second quarter.
