Why Women Kill is a dark comedy-drama anthology series that premiered on CBS All Access in August 2019. Created by Marc Cherry, the show follows three different women living in three different decades, all of whom experience marital strife and infidelity, leading them to consider murder as a way out of their troubles. The first storyline is set in 1963 and centers around Beth Ann Stanton (Ginnifer Goodwin), a traditional housewife who discovers her husband Rob's (Sam Jaeger) affair with a waitress. Devastated, Beth Ann seeks the help of her new neighbor and friend, Rita Castillo (Luna Blaise), and eventually considers taking drastic measures to rid herself of her unfaithful husband. Meanwhile, socialite Simone Grove (Lucy Liu) and her husband Karl (Jack Davenport) navigate their open marriage while struggling with their own secrets and desires. The second storyline takes place in 1984 and follows Simone's daughter, the wealthy and privileged socialite Alma Fillcot (Allison Tolman), who discovers her husband Bertram (Nick Frost) is a closeted gay man. Desperate to maintain her perfect facade and social status, Alma turns to her friend/interior decorator Isabel (Valerie Mahaffey) for help in covering up Bertram's secret. The final storyline is set in 2019 and centers around successful lawyer Taylor Harding (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and her relationship with her husband Eli (Reid Scott), who is determined to have a child through any means necessary. As Taylor navigates the difficulties of infertility and modern-day marriage, she discovers her own dark desires and the possibility of violence. Throughout the series, each woman struggles with different societal pressures and the restrictive roles assigned to them in their respective timelines. The show's themes touch on issues of gender, sexuality, class, and power dynamics, all while weaving together a gripping storyline of mystery and intrigue. Why Women Kill boasts a talented cast, including Jack Davenport (Coupling, Pirates of the Caribbean), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill, Elementary), and Allison Tolman (Fargo, Good Girls). The series' unique approach to storytelling, with each storyline set in a different decade, allows for interesting reflections on gender and its fluidity over time. The show's flirtation with violence and murder adds a bit of a horror element, making it an engaging and thrilling watch. Overall, Why Women Kill is a well-executed series that explores the various ways women have been forced to navigate their lives and relationships throughout history.
