WandaVision is a television series that premiered on the streaming service Disney+ in January 2021. It stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Marvel superhero Scarlet Witch, and Paul Bettany as Vision, an android and fellow Avenger. The show is set after the events of 2019's Avengers: Endgame and is the first series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to be produced by Marvel Studios. WandaVision initially appears to take cues from classic American sitcoms, with each episode adopting a new aesthetic inspired by famous TV shows from the 1950s to the 2010s. The show's first two episodes were released simultaneously, with subsequent episodes being released on a weekly basis. It's a genre-bending mix of comedy, drama, and mystery, and demands the viewer to be patient as the plot evolves over time. The series starts with Wanda and Vision living in a seemingly idyllic neighborhood called Westview. The first episode's aesthetic is inspired by The Dick Van Dyke Show, with Wanda and Vision trying to fit in with the other residents and conceal their true identities. The second episode's aesthetic is inspired by Bewitched with Wanda and Vision preparing for a magic show for the town's talent show. However, it is soon revealed that not everything in Westview is as it seems. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that Wanda has created a new reality within Westview. It's unclear whether Wanda is aware of what she's doing, but the town's residents are being manipulated to behave like characters in a sitcom. Vision is shown to be aware of the strangeness of Westview, but his attempts to uncover the truth are met with opposition from both Wanda and the unknown forces at work. The series introduces new characters, including Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), a S.W.O.R.D. agent who's been tasked with investigating Westview, and the nosy neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn), who's seemingly aware that something is amiss. The show also brings back characters from previous Marvel movies, including Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) from Thor and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) from Ant-Man and the Wasp. As the series progresses, it becomes apparent that Wanda isn't the only one manipulating the residents of Westview. Some of the characters' true identities are in question, and the show raises questions about the boundary between reality and fiction. As the MCU has more iterations coming release like Loki, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and more, these new shows are all interconnected like phase 1, 2, and 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which makes the audience is excited for the upcoming ones. The show's tone shifts dramatically as the mystery behind Westview's reality unfolds. While the opening episodes adopt a sitcom humor, the show becomes eerier and darker, with a haunting score and disturbing imagery. The series explores the trauma that Wanda has faced and her grief at the loss of Vision. This results in some of the more emotional moments in the series, and Elizabeth Olsen gives an outstanding performance. Overall, WandaVision is an intriguing series that takes the viewer on a complex journey through genre and reality. It's a bold move for Marvel to create a series so different from their established superhero movies. The show's blend of humor, mystery, and emotion makes it a standout addition to Marvel's expanding universe. When considering Olsen and Bettany's acting, the writing and the cinematography, and the mix of genres, WandaVision is an experience in and of itself.
