Truth Seekers is a brand-new Amazon Prime Original series that premiered in 2020. This supernatural comedy horror show is created by Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, James Serafinowicz, Nat Saunders and directed by Jim Field Smith. The show follows a team of part-time paranormal investigators who travel around the United Kingdom investigating supernatural phenomenon while working for an internet company. This group consists of Gus (Nick Frost), who is the team leader, who has been interested in the paranormal since he was young due to his personal struggles, to Elton (Samson Kayo), who is Gus’s colleague and has the ability to sense spiritual energy. Malcolm McDowell plays the character of Richard, Gus's father-in-law. Truth Seekers focuses on the underlying backstories of each central character and their motivations, alongside their personal conflicts, that dictate their behaviors and actions. The series is set in the modern-day world with a nostalgic tone and feel, exploring the concepts of the paranormal and supernatural world. The show begins with Gus’s digitizing the internet network with his employer (Smyle), installing different devices with cameras around the UK to provide his unique, quirky, and hilarious supernatural exploration gameplay stories with a vast following of “Truth Seekers.” Gus has theories about the paranormal, and he and his team focus on odd occurrences in his coverage, which are then combined to form a more significant case as the episodes are progressing. As the story unfolds, we come to know of Gus's personal struggles that include his wife's ill-health, who is in a vegetative state, and his struggle to make ends meet by working the same job day in day out. Gus is a likable character, and we can relate to his struggles and want to see him succeed. As the team investigates paranormal hotspots and historic spiritual locations around the UK, they begin to piece together a more significant conspiracy, which involves their employer, Smyle, and supernatural activity centered on a new disruptive internet project. The team discovers that Smyle is not what it seems and has secrets which are being hidden from the general public. As the show progresses, the team uncovers a plot that puts their lives in danger as they try to expose the truth. The show has a mix of horror, suspense, and comedy that keep the audience entertained throughout. The characters are likable, quirky, flawed, and hilarious all at the same time. The show also manages to pull off some good jump scares, providing some genuinely creepy moments that would satisfy a horror fan. The supernatural element is woven into the show very well, not overshadowing the humor and vice versa. The ghosts and spirits that the team encounters are not typical run-of-the-mill spooky entities. They are unique and provide an interesting backstory to the site being investigated. The ghostly remains they investigate, including one that haunts a school turned flat, are hilariously explained with a refreshing perspective that is not the typical ghost story. The show also does an excellent job of touching upon the concept of life after death, loss, grief, and guilt, and making these issues relatable to the audience. The portrayal of grief and how different individuals handle loss has been shown quite earnestly with respect and sensitivity. Overall, Truth Seekers is a fun, intriguing, and spooky comedy that is well worth watching. The story is well written, its characters are likable, and the humor and spooky elements are balanced perfectly. The show has a unique tone and atmosphere that is distinct to itself, making it an enjoyable watch that is not at all predictable. The ending sets the stage for a possible sequel which I cannot wait to see.
