The View is a daytime talk and entertainment television show that airs on the American Broadcasting Company's affiliate stations across the country and on partner stations across the world. The show was conceived by Barbara Walters, who also co-hosts The View, and ABC co-executive producer Bill Geddie. Debuting on August 11th, 1997, The View has been praised for its promotion of women in both media and culture. The general format of the show consists of a panel of female co-hosts who discuss general interest topics such as national news, health and more. During most shows, the panel will interview a guest, or a guest will co-host the entire show. Guests tend to be celebrities, political figures, charity organization representatives and newsworthy individuals. Currently, the show is co-hosted by Joy Behar, Sherri Shepard, Elizabeth Hasselbeck and Barbara Walters, although Walters serves as co-executive producer and is only included as a part-time co-host. Additionally, Whoopi Goldberg serves as the show's discussion moderator. In the past, The View's panel has also included notable co-hosts Rosie O'Donnell, Lisa Ling, Star Jones and Meredith Vieira. Throughout its run, The View has been known for tackling controversial subjects, such as America's foreign policy, gay rights, drug use and race relations. As a result, various members of the show's panel have had very animated and emotional on-air arguments, with some even resulting in panel members walking off of the show in mid-broadcast. One notable example of this behavior involved an argument between Bill O'Reilly, Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, ultimately resulting in Behar and Goldberg leaving in the middle of a segment. The View has received critical acclaim for its approach to the daytime talk format and has gone on to be nominated for various awards, including Emmy Awards, People's Choice Awards, NAACP Image Awards and more. The show has won Daytime Emmy Awards for "Outstanding Talk Show" and "Favorite Talk Show" in 2003 and 2009. Most recently, The View has been nominated for "Best Talk Show" by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association for the 2012 Critic's Choice Television Awards.
