The Messengers was a supernatural drama television series that aired on The CW from April to July 2015. Created by Eoghan O'Donnell, the show followed a group of strangers who suddenly find themselves imbued with extraordinary powers and tasked with saving the world from a looming apocalypse. Starring Shantel VanSanten, Diogo Morgado, JD Pardo, and other talented actors, the show blended elements of science fiction, mystery, and action to create a thrilling and engaging viewing experience. The series began with a cosmic event that sent a shockwave across the earth, killing five people in the process. However, these individuals did not stay dead for long as they were resurrected and given supernatural abilities by a mysterious entity known as The Man. These powers included superhuman strength, teleportation, healing, and psychic abilities, among others. Confused and frightened by their newfound gifts, the five strangers gradually discover that they are part of a larger plan to combat the forces of evil that threaten to bring about the end of the world. As the show progressed, we learn that The Man is actually a fallen angel called Lucifer who seeks to reclaim his position as the ruler of the underworld. He plans to do this by using his minions, also known as The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, to unleash destruction and chaos upon the world. In order to stop him, the five messengers must find and protect a mysterious object called the Seventh Seal, which is the key to preventing the Horsemen from bringing about the apocalypse. Throughout the series, the messengers must contend with not only the Horsemen, but also various other dangers and obstacles including a powerful government agency, a cult led by a dangerous prophet, and their own personal demons. Along the way, they also uncover deep secrets about their pasts and come to understand the true nature of their mission. One of the strengths of The Messengers was its diverse cast of characters, all of whom had their own unique personalities, backstories, and motivations. Shantel VanSanten played Vera, a conflicted scientist who was the first to discover the existence of the Horsemen. She was joined by JD Pardo as Raul, a former gang member turned FBI agent; Diogo Morgado as the charismatic and enigmatic Devil; Sofia Black-D'Elia as Erin, a troubled runaway with former drug addiction; and Joel Courtney as Peter, a teenager struggling to come to terms with his abilities. Together, these actors delivered strong performances and had great chemistry on-screen, making the viewer feel invested in their characters' journeys. The show also had a well-crafted mythology that kept viewers intrigued and engaged throughout the season. While it was unfortunately cancelled after just one season due to low ratings, the show had a satisfying conclusion that wrapped up the major storylines while still leaving room for potential future installments. Overall, The Messengers was an entertaining and engaging supernatural drama that managed to stand out in a crowded genre. With great performances, engaging storylines, and a unique premise, it was a shame that it did not get a chance to continue its story. However, for anyone looking for a thrilling and emotionally charged viewing experience, the single season of The Messengers is definitely worth checking out.
