The Cleveland Show is an American animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Henry, and Richard Appel. It is a spin-off of the popular animated show Family Guy, and it first premiered on FOX on September 27, 2009. The show ran for four seasons, until its final episode on May 19, 2013. The show follows the life of Cleveland Brown, a former deli owner who moves from Quahog, Rhode Island, to Stoolbend, Virginia, to start a new life with his high school sweetheart, Donna Tubbs, and her two children, Roberta and Rallo. Cleveland's own son, Cleveland Jr., also moves with him to Stoolbend. The show focuses on the daily adventures and misadventures of the Brown-Tubbs family and their friends and neighbors. Mike Henry voices the character of Cleveland Brown, and he also serves as one of the show's creators and writers. Sanaa Lathan voices Donna Tubbs, Kevin Michael Richardson voices Cleveland's next-door neighbor, Lester Krinklesac, and Seth MacFarlane voices several characters, including Tim the Bear, a talking bear who is one of Cleveland's best friends. Other prominent voice actors in the show include Reagan Gomez-Preston, who voices Roberta Tubbs, and Jason Sudeikis, who voices Holt Ritcher, Cleveland's cool neighbor. The Cleveland Show is known for its hilarious and irreverent humor, which is similar to that of Family Guy. However, the show also tackles more serious issues, such as racism, poverty, and identity. One of the show's recurring themes is the challenges faced by African Americans in modern society, and it often uses satire and parody to comment on these issues. For example, in one episode, Cleveland runs for mayor of Stoolbend in order to combat the town's rampant racism. The show also has a number of recurring jokes and gags that keep fans coming back for more. For example, in every episode, Cleveland helps his neighbor Lester with some task or errand, only to end up getting mistaken for a prostitute by Lester's wife, Kendra. Another recurring gag is Tim the Bear's weekly attempts to join a human bowling league, which always end in disastrous results. In terms of animation style, The Cleveland Show is similar to Family Guy, but it has its own distinctive visual look. The show features bright colors and bold outlines, and it often makes use of split-screen and highly stylized sequences to emphasize a particular joke or moment. Despite its popularity, The Cleveland Show was not immune to criticism. Some viewers felt that the show relied too heavily on jokes about race and stereotypes, and that it lacked the biting wit and creativity of Family Guy. Others felt that the show leaned too heavily on its established characters and didn't do enough to create new ones. Overall, however, The Cleveland Show was a successful and entertaining animated sitcom that offered a fresh take on familiar characters and themes. It may not have achieved the same cultural impact as its predecessor, but it still managed to carve out its own unique niche in the world of animation.
