The Canterville Ghost is a brand new television series from BYUtv that was released in 2021. Starring Tom Graves, Joe Graves and Caroline Catz, the show is a modern and refreshing adaptation of the classic Oscar Wilde story of the same name. The series follows the story of the Otis family, who move into a historical English country estate known as Canterville Chase. It doesn't take long before the family discovers that they are not alone in the house, as they soon meet the ghost haunting the estate. The ghost of Canterville Chase is the former lord of the manor, Sir Simon, who has been cursed to haunt the halls of the estate for over four hundred years. Despite his experience, Sir Simon is unable to scare off the new occupants of the house - a modern and tech-savvy family from America. The Otis family, led by Harry and Betty (played by Tom and Joe Graves, respectively), are unfazed by the paranormal activity in their new home, and instead, are more interested in capturing it on film and sharing it with their followers on social media. Sir Simon (played by Stephen Fry), who has had centuries to perfect his spooking techniques, is taken aback by the Otis family's attitude towards him. This leads to a hilarious battle of wits between the two camps, where Sir Simon tries everything in his power to scare off the Otis family. From haunting their dreams to trying to possess their possessions, Sir Simon is relentless in his efforts to get them out of Canterville Chase. But despite his best efforts, the Otis family is not scared off, and they are determined to stay put in their new home. The series is a masterful blend of comedy, drama and horror. The writing is clever, witty and fast-paced, with jokes coming at you from all angles. The performances are top-notch, with Caroline Catz delivering an excellent portrayal of Lady Jessica, the love interest of Sir Simon. Her presence adds a layer of depth and humanity to the otherwise ghostly interactions, and her chemistry with Stephen Fry is electric. The chemistry between Tom and Joe Graves is equally impressive, with the brothers playing off each other effortlessly. One of the standout features of The Canterville Ghost is its setting. The series is filmed on location in a historical country estate, which provides a stunning backdrop of the rolling English countryside. The attention to detail is impressive, with the production team utilising every inch of their setting to create an immersive and authentic experience for the viewer. Another standout feature of the series is its use of technology. The Otis family is portrayed as a modern, social media-savvy family, and their use of technology is integrated seamlessly into the storytelling. From live streaming their paranormal investigations to using smart home technology to communicate with Sir Simon, the show embraces modernity in a way that feels fresh and innovative. Overall, The Canterville Ghost is a series that is both smart and entertaining. It is a refreshing take on a classic story that manages to stay true to the source material while injecting it with new life. Its blend of horror, comedy and drama makes it the perfect series for anyone who loves a good ghost story, and its modern twist means it will appeal to a new generation of viewers.
