The series is set during the Joseon era in Korea and tells the story of Kim Yoon-hee (Park Min-young), a young woman who disguises herself as a man to attend Sungkyunkwan University in order to support her family. Sungkyunkwan is a prestigious institution that only accepts male students, and Yoon-hee is forced to hide her true identity in order to gain a higher education. Along with Yoon-hee, there are three other male students who become her close friends and allies - Lee Sun-joon (Park Yoo-chun), Goo Yong-ha (Song Joong-ki), and Moon Jae-shin (Yoo Ah-in). Despite her initial reluctance to befriend them due to her secret, Yoon-hee eventually grows to trust and rely on them for help in navigating the trials and tribulations of university life. The plot of the show centers around Yoon-hee's attempts to keep her identity hidden while also dealing with the various challenges that arise at Sungkyunkwan. This includes dealing with the class differences between her and the other students, as well as facing off against some of the more corrupt faculty members at the university who seek to exploit their power. Their romance is complicated by Yoon-hee's secret, which threatens to drive a wedge between them if it is ever discovered. In addition to the main plotline, there are also several side stories and subplots that flesh out the world of the show and the different characters that inhabit it. This includes the brewing political tensions of the era, as well as the personal struggles that many of the characters face both at school and in their personal lives. The acting in Sungkyunkwan Scandal is top-notch, with standout performances from all of the main cast members. Park Min-young in particular shines as Yoon-hee, managing to convincingly portray both her male persona as well as her vulnerable and self-doubting moments.
