Stargirl is a live-action superhero television series created by Geoff Johns for DC Universe. The show is based on the DC Comics character, Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, and follows her journey as a young high school teenager who discovers the cosmic staff and becomes Stargirl. The show premiered on May 18, 2020, and ran for two seasons. The series starts with the main character, Courtney, moving to a new town with her mother and stepfather. She struggles to fit in at Blue Valley High School and learns that her stepfather was once a member of the Justice Society of America (JSA), a group of superheroes who fought villains in the past. As she uncovers more about her stepfather's past and the JSA, she discovers the cosmic staff and decides to become the next Stargirl. As the series progresses, Courtney enlists her classmates to help her fight against the Injustice Society of America (ISA), a group of villains led by the enigmatic and dangerous Icicle (Neil Jackson). The ISA has infiltrated Blue Valley and is working to achieve their goals of world domination. Alongside her team of fellow superheroes, Stargirl battles the ISA's members, including Brainwave (Christopher James Baker), Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins), and Tigress (Joy Osmanski). Throughout the series, Stargirl also forms relationships with her stepbrother, Mike (Trae Romano), her teammate, Beth Chapel/Doctor Mid-Nite (Anjelika Washington), and her mentor, Pat Dugan/S.T.R.I.P.E (Luke Wilson). She also forms a romantic relationship with her classmate, Henry Jr. (Jake Austin Walker), whose father is Brainwave, one of her primary antagonists. Stargirl is a refreshing take on the superhero genre, focusing on the personal relationships and emotional growth of the characters rather than solely relying on action sequences. The show is visually stunning, with vibrant and colorful superhero costumes and beautifully shot scenes. The performances of the actors, particularly Brec Bassinger and Luke Wilson, are top-notch, bringing humor and heart to their roles. The show also incorporates elements of nostalgia for fans of the JSA and the larger DC Comics universe, featuring cameos and references to characters such as Wildcat, Doctor Fate, and Hourman. Fans of the Arrowverse will also appreciate the crossover episode between Stargirl and The Flash, which connects the two universes. Overall, Stargirl is a well-written and well-produced superhero series that appeals to both comic book fans and general audiences. With its engaging characters and exciting plotlines, it is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys the genre.
