Star Trek was a television series back in the 1960's, which ran for 3 years. It was a science fiction series with a cast including William Shatner, who starred at Captain James T. Kirk. The cast also included Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. He was the only officer who was not from the Planet Earth. Then they had DeForest Kelley as Doctor McCoy. His nickname was 'Bones'. Next came James Doohan who was chief engineer Montgomery Scott. In addition there was Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura, the communications officer, George Takei as Lt. Sulu, the helmsman, and Walter Konig as Chekov. All the aforementioned cast appeared as the crew of the United Star Ship Enterprise. They were all officers in Star Fleet Command, the military protectors of Earth and numerous other planets. The series followed their adventures, as they followed the orders of Star Fleet Headquarters. It became known, through the many episodes, that all officers had to go through Star Fleet Academy for several years, before they were qualified for duty. Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy were shown to be very close friends, as well as military representatives of Star Fleet. There was always some kind of friendly friction between Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock, due to Mr. Spock's steadfast dedication to logic. His seeming lack of emotions were a major help and hindrance to every episode. The series was broadcast for three years, ending original showing in 1969. It is the only series in television history, to go into syndication until the present day. It also spawned many motion pictures, which were more popular than the original series. The original series did receive good ratings at first, but they did not keep up. The original star of the series was going to be Jeffrey Hunter starring as Capt. Pike, but NBC failed to approve the pilot episode. The series had been cancelled after its first season. However, there was a very strong fan base, and a nationwide letter writing campaign convinced NBC to resurrect the series.
