Pretty Hard Cases is a Canadian police procedural comedy-drama that premiered on CBC in 2021. It follows two unlikely detectives, Sam and Kelly, as they navigate their chaotic personal lives and solve crime on the gritty streets of Toronto. Meredith MacNeill, who also co-created the show, plays Sam, a tough and successful detective who has it all together on the job but struggles to balance her work and personal life. Adrienne C. Moore, known for her role on Orange Is the New Black, plays Kelly, a street smart officer with a wild past and a penchant for breaking the rules. The show's comedic elements come from the personalities of the two detectives, who have very different approaches to police work. Sam is by-the-book and straight-laced, while Kelly is impulsive and unafraid to bend the rules to get the job done. Throughout the series, Sam and Kelly investigate a variety of cases, ranging from murders and robberies to missing persons and drug trafficking. As they work together, they not only have to untangle complex cases but also navigate their own personal issues, including Kelly's strained relationship with her mother and Sam's struggles with dating and motherhood. In addition to MacNeill and Moore, the ensemble cast includes Al Mukadam as their boss and mentor, as well as a rotating lineup of guest stars, including Canadian icon Wendy Crewson. One of the unique aspects of Pretty Hard Cases is its location. Set in Toronto's diverse neighborhoods, the show showcases the city's landmarks and culture. It also highlights the challenges faced by the city's police force, including the opioid epidemic and tensions between different communities. Overall, Pretty Hard Cases offers a fresh take on the police procedural genre, with strong performances from its leads and a healthy balance of drama and comedy. Whether you're a fan of crime shows, comedies, or both, it's definitely worth checking out.
