Pinocchio is a South Korean television drama that aired on SBS from November 2014 to January 2015. The show has a unique storyline that revolves around the lives of three aspiring journalists who work hard to uncover the truth and report it to the world. The show features an ensemble cast with talented actors and actresses, including Lee Jong-suk as Choi Dal-po, Park Shin-hye as Choi In-ha, and Kim Young-kwang as Seo Beom-Jo. The show follows Choi Dal-po, who is actually Ki Ha-myung, a young boy from a small village who lived with his mother and older brother. However, due to an unfortunate incident, the family had to move to the city and change their identities. Eventually, Ha-myung's brother dies in a huge fire incident caused by corrupt journalists who misled the public, including his mother who was a witness to the incident. This incident leaves Ha-myung traumatized and pushes him to change his identity once again, this time as Choi Dal-po, to become a journalist and uncover the truth behind the incident that changed the course of his life. Choi In-ha is a girl with a unique trait; she has the Pinocchio syndrome, which makes her hiccup whenever she lies. Due to the rare condition, In-ha is unable to become a lawyer like her mother and joins the journalism field. She and Choi Dal-po both work for a news station, with In-ha being an intern and Dal-po a rookie reporter. The show's plot revolves around the two's love-hate relationship as they work together and share a common goal in uncovering the truth. Their journalistic ambitions and the desire to tell the truth to the world has them chasing one story after another, often leading to conflicts with their seniors and colleagues. Seo Beom-jo is the third journalist in the show, who competes for the same position as the two protagonists in a bigger media company. However, he discovers that his mother was among the corrupt journalists who covered up the fire incident that killed Ha-myung's family. By trying to protect his mother's identity, Beom-jo's integrity is questioned, and he becomes estranged from In-ha. Throughout the show, the three journalists cross paths with various characters, each having their own contribution to uncovering the truth behind the fire. Among them are Park Ro-sa, a news anchor with a secret past, and Cha Ok, a ruthless and infamous reporter who will do anything to get ahead. Overall, Pinocchio is a thrilling and emotional show that tackles serious themes such as corruption and media ethics. It is a story of the journey toward the painful truths of the past, the power of forgiveness, and the strength of resilience. The show has a well-written script that keeps the audience hooked from the very beginning, with the perfect balance of action, drama, and romance. It highlights the importance of responsible journalism and honesty in a world where truth is often hidden behind lies. If you are a fan of K-dramas, Pinocchio is an absolute must-watch.
