Pinocchio is a South Korean drama television series that aired on SBS from November 2014 to January 2015. It is a story about truth-seeking, self-discovery, and love, woven around the concept of the fictional character Pinocchio, who has a unique condition that causes him to hiccup whenever he tells a lie. The show stars Lee Jong-suk as Choi Dal-po, a young boy who lost his family to a tragic accident, and was raised by his grandfather. Park Shin-hye plays Choi In-ha, a young woman with the same condition as Pinocchio, who dreams of becoming a journalist. Kim Young-kwang is Seo Beom-jo, a rich and successful, yet bitter news anchor who has a tragic past of his own. Together, these three characters navigate the cutthroat world of broadcast journalism, as they try to uncover the truth behind the stories they report. The show begins in 2005, as a devastating fire breaks out in a factory in Inju City, killing several people, including Choi Dal-po's family. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Choi Dal-po is rescued by a kind-hearted reporter, Song Cha-ok (played by Jin Kyung), who covers the story. Inspired by her bravery, he decides to become a reporter himself, using the pseudonym "Dal-po" as a tribute to his rescuer. Years later, Choi In-ha and Choi Dal-po cross paths in a broadcasting school, where they become close friends. Through their time together, they discover that they share a unique condition, which causes them to hiccup whenever they tell a lie. This condition proves to be both a blessing and a curse, as they are compelled to tell the truth, no matter the cost. Their friendship is tested when they both apply for internships at YGN news, one of the top networks in South Korea. Led by the ambitious and ruthless news director, Lee Yeong-tak (played by Lee Pil-mo), the network is notorious for chasing ratings at any cost, often sacrificing journalistic integrity for sensational and inaccurate stories. Despite their differences, Choi In-ha and Choi Dal-po both manage to earn internships at YGN, setting the stage for their journey as reporters. Along the way, they forge relationships with other characters, including Seo Beom-jo, who works at a rival network, MSC, and who becomes Choi In-ha's love interest; and Yoon Yoo-rae (played by Lee Yu-bi), a former child actress turned reporter, who becomes Dal-po's friend and mentor. Throughout the series, the characters face a variety of challenges, from covering high-profile stories like the collapse of a shopping mall, to navigating complicated personal relationships. They also face pushback from those in power, including Lee Yeong-tak and his protege, a ruthless and manipulative reporter named Ki Jae-myeong (played by Byun Hee-bong), who has a dark secret of his own. Ultimately, Pinocchio is a gripping and emotional drama that explores questions of truth and justice, while also showcasing the power of human connection and love. With stellar performances by its lead actors and a compelling story that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, Pinocchio is a must-watch for fans of Korean drama.
