Nuts + Bolts is a docu-series that debuted on Viceland on August 3, 2017. The show was created by Tyler the Creator, who is also the host. The premise of the show is that Tyler the Creator is curious about how things work and wants to learn how to make them. Each episode focuses on a different topic, from stop-motion animation to sneakers to go-karts, and Tyler seeks out experts in these fields to teach him how things are made. One of the most unique aspects of the show is the eclectic mix of guests Tyler has on. Throughout the series, he meets with a wide range of people, including remixer and producer Mark Ronson, stop-motion animator Henry Selick, professional skateboarder Na-Kel Smith, and actor Breckin Meyer, among others. Tyler is genuinely curious and engaged with each of these guests, and viewers get the sense that he is learning a lot from them. In each episode, Tyler begins by explaining what he wants to learn and why he's interested in it. He then seeks out an expert in that field, often finding people through social media or simply cold-calling businesses and asking to speak to someone who can teach him what he wants to know. Once Tyler has identified an expert, he spends time with them, learning about the process, the tools and materials needed, and the challenges involved in creating the thing he's interested in. One of the things that sets Nuts + Bolts apart from other shows about making things is Tyler's irreverent sense of humor. He's a charismatic host who isn't afraid to be silly or poke fun at himself. This is particularly evident in the episode where he meets with Breckin Meyer to learn about go-kart racing. The two spend much of the episode goofing around and joking with each other, but there's also a real sense of camaraderie as they work together to build a go-kart from scratch. Despite Tyler's lighthearted approach, the show does delve into some serious topics. In the episode where he meets with Henry Selick to learn about stop-motion animation, for example, Tyler talks about his childhood love of The Nightmare Before Christmas and how it inspired him to get into animation. Selick, who also directed that film, talks about the long and difficult process of creating stop-motion animation, as well as the importance of having a clear vision and strong story. There's a sense that Tyler respects the art form and wants to do it justice, even while he's learning the ropes. Overall, Nuts + Bolts is an entertaining and engaging show that celebrates curiosity and creativity. Tyler the Creator is an engaging host who clearly loves learning new things, and his enthusiasm is infectious. The show is well-produced, with slick graphics and animations that help explain some of the more technical aspects of each episode. And while it's certainly not a comprehensive guide to making things, it's a fun and lighthearted look at the creative process that's sure to inspire viewers to try something new.
