Miracle Workers is a 2019 comedy television series created by Simon Rich and aired on TBS. The show is a modern twist on the concept of miracles and religion, set in Heaven, with Steve Buscemi playing God and Daniel Radcliffe playing an angel named Craig who is in charge of answering prayers from humans on Earth. The series is based on Simon Richâs book, What in God's Name, which infuses the world of religion with humor and satire while exploring themes such as loss, faith, and redemption. The series is a perfect blend of dark comedy, slapstick humor, and heartwarming moments. Throughout the course of the series, God decides to destroy the Earth, which prompts Craig to come up with an elaborate plan to save it. Craig takes the help of Eliza (Geraldine Viswanathan), a hard-working and resourceful employee in the Department of Answered Prayers, to help him save Earth from being destroyed. Along with Eliza, they assemble a team of misfits, including Sanjay (Karan Soni), a newbie angel, and Sam (Jon Bass), a chauvinistic alcoholic warrior angel. The series takes place over multiple episodes, each of which is dedicated to a different miracle that Craig and his team must perform in order to convince God to save the Earth. These miracles range from simple tasks, like helping a single woman find love, to grander acts like saving an entire city from destruction. The show is filled with iconic performances by Steve Buscemi, who brings a passive-aggressive, cynical charm to his portrayal of God. Daniel Radcliffe's portrayal of Craig is a perfect complement, as Radcliffe's character is quiet, nervous and deeply moral, which stands in stark contrast to Buscemi's eccentric God. Geraldine Viswanathan's Eliza is the standout performance of the show, as she serves as the glue that holds the team together. She is resourceful, smart, and constantly coming up with new ways to solve problems, making her the perfect ally for Craig. Throughout the series, the cast delivers a hilarious, often raunchy, and deeply heartfelt performance that makes the show a true gem. One of the strengths of Miracle Workers is its ability to blend humor with genuine emotional resonance. The show manages to touch on difficult subjects like death and loss, without ever feeling maudlin or overly sentimental. Instead, the series' writers use humor to cut through the emotional stakes, which creates a uniquely warm and sarcastic tone. Overall, Miracle Workers is an engaging and inventive series that defies easy categorization. It's not just a comedy, but a thoughtfully crafted satire that explores the human condition with a light touch. With strong performances from Buscemi, Radcliffe, Viswanathan and a standout supporting cast, Miracle Workers will leave you laughing, as well as reflecting on some deep existential questions.
