Manhunt is an American crime drama series which aired on NBC in 2017. The show is a gripping true story of how the FBI captured the infamous Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, who wreaked havoc in the US for over two decades with his mail bombs. The series follows the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) who are charged with capturing Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber. The BAU team is led by Agent Jim Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington), who is a skilled profiler and cryptanalyst with years of experience in the FBI. His team includes Agent Don Ackerman (Jeremy Bobb), Agent Stan Cole (Hezekiah Lewis), and linguistics expert Agent Natalie Rogers (Lynn Collins). The Unabomber's reign of terror began in 1978 and spanned over two decades. His first bombing occurred at Northwestern University in 1978, and his last in 1995, killing three and injuring 23. The FBI was at a loss and had no leads, causing them to turn to Fitzgerald and his BAU team for help. Fitzgerald quickly realizes that the Unabomber is targeting people and institutions associated with modern technology, and that he is an anarchist with a hatred of government and corporations. As the team begins to piece together information, they discover that the Unabomber left behind a manifesto, which was published in the Washington Post in 1995. This manifesto is a rambling 35,000-word document that includes the Unabomber's twisted philosophy and his vision for a utopian society. The team believes that the manifesto will be key in finding the Unabomber. Agent Fitzgerald becomes obsessed with capturing the Unabomber and recognizes the need for a different approach. He believes that the manifesto holds the key to finding the Unabomber, but his superiors disagree. Fitzgerald goes against orders and leaks the manifesto to the press, causing a public outcry and forcing the Unabomber to make contact with the FBI. The series portrays the complex dynamic between the BAU team and the Unabomber, as they try to outmaneuver each other in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. It also delves into the personal lives of the agents, making the show relatable and multidimensional. Agent Fitzgerald, in particular, is portrayed as a flawed hero, whose obsession with catching the Unabomber puts a strain on his family life. The show features excellent performances from its lead actors. Sam Worthington's portrayal of Agent Fitzgerald is nuanced and emotional, as he struggles with his inner demons while also trying to catch the Unabomber. Paul Bettany's portrayal of the Unabomber is chilling and nuanced, as he expertly portrays the ambiguity and complexity of the character. Chris Noth, Jeremy Bobb, and Lynn Collins also deliver standout performances, adding to the show's depth and realism. Overall, Manhunt is a well-crafted crime drama that hits all the right notes. It is a masterful retelling of one of the most intriguing cases in FBI history, and it provides a fascinating insight into the mind of a killer. The show successfully blends action, drama, and suspense to create a gripping series that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
