In the early 19th century, magic had vanished from England; that is until two very different magicians appeared: Mr Norrell and Jonathan Strange. This seven-part miniseries tells the story of these two men as they navigate their way through the world of magic and the politics of society. Eddie Marsan plays the role of Mr Norrell, a bookish and reclusive magician who has spent his life studying magic and collecting books. He is highly respected in the magician community but has never performed magic himself. Bertie Carvel plays Jonathan Strange, a charming and impulsive man who discovers his own magical abilities and becomes Mr Norrell's protégé. As the two magicians begin to work together, they discover the secrets of English magic and start to bring it back to life. However, their differing approaches to magic soon cause tension between them. Mr Norrell believes in a strict adherence to rules and tradition, while Jonathan Strange is more experimental and open to new ideas. As they perform increasingly complex and dangerous magic, their actions have unintended consequences that threaten to upend both their lives and the political order of England itself. Marc Warren plays The Gentleman, a dangerous fairy who is drawn to the magicians' power and attempts to manipulate them for his own ends. Charlotte Riley plays Arabella, the wife of Jonathan Strange, who is initially skeptical of her husband's involvement in magic but eventually becomes entangled in the world of English magic.
