In Contempt is a legal drama series that aired on BET in 2018. Created by Terri Kopp and starring Erica Ash as Gwen Sullivan, the show tells the story of a group of public defenders in the city of Los Angeles. Gwen, a highly skilled and passionate idealist, works for the Defenders Association of Los Angeles, alongside other motivated defenders who are also fighting for justice for their clients. The team is led by Charlie Riggs (Christian Keyes), a charismatic and ambitious attorney who is not afraid to break the rules to achieve what he believes is right. The rest of the team includes Tracy (Megan Hutchings), an overachieving young lawyer, and the hot-headed and unpredictable Earl Sullivan (Ronnie Rowe Jr.), who also happens to be Gwen's brother. Throughout the ten episodes of the show, the Defenders Association of Los Angeles takes on a series of challenging cases, each of which tests the team's resolve and puts their personal beliefs and relationships to the test. In doing so, In Contempt explores the complex dynamics of the justice system, as well as the ethical and moral dilemmas that defenders face on a daily basis. In the first episode, we are introduced to Gwen Sullivan, a strong and assertive public defender who is known for her sharp tongue and no-nonsense approach. Gwen is a single mother who is struggling to make ends meet, and who also has to contend with the sexism and misogyny that permeates the legal profession. Despite these obstacles, Gwen is determined to make a difference in the lives of her clients, even if it means putting her own career on the line. As the show progresses, we see that Gwen's passion for justice is not just limited to the courtroom. She is also an activist who fights for the rights of the black community, and who is not afraid to speak her mind when it comes to matters of social justice. Throughout the series, we see the toll that this takes on her personal life, as she struggles to balance her work with her responsibilities as a mother. Charlie Riggs, Gwen's boss, is a suave and charming attorney who is always looking for ways to win the cases that the team takes on. He is also fiercely ambitious, and we see him make some morally questionable decisions in pursuit of his goals. Tracy, the youngest member of the team, is an overachiever who is constantly seeking the approval of her superiors. Earl, Gwen's brother, is a former gang member who has turned his life around and is now a valued member of the team. However, he still struggles with anger management issues that threaten to derail his career. Throughout the show, we see the lawyers take on a variety of cases, each of which raises different legal and ethical questions. In one episode, they defend a man who has been wrongfully accused of murder, while in another, they fight to protect the rights of a group of homeless people who are being forced out of their encampment. In each case, the team is faced with the challenge of balancing their professional responsibilities with their personal beliefs, while also dealing with the sometimes dangerous and violent world of crime and corruption. Overall, In Contempt is a compelling and thought-provoking legal drama that explores some of the most pressing issues facing the American justice system today. With an excellent cast, strong writing, and expert direction, this show is a must-watch for fans of the genre, as well as anyone interested in social justice and the intricacies of the legal profession.
