Harriet the Spy is a revamped and modernized adaptation of Louise Fitzhugh's 1964 children's book of the same title. It follows the adventures of an intelligent and curious 11-year-old girl named Harriet M. Welsch, played by the talented Beanie Feldstein, who is an aspiring writer and spy residing in New York City. As her parents focus on their careers, Harriet retreats into her private world of observations in which she keeps a detailed journal about everything and everyone around her. Her journaling habit spirals out of control, and Harriet ends up alienating herself from her friends, with everyone feeling targeted by her candid writing. Lacey Chabert plays the role of the self-assured and popular Marion Hawthorne, and Harriet's best friend in the series. They share a complicated friendship, which forms the backbone of the plot. Jane Lynch plays Harriet's nanny, Ole Golly, a significant mother figure for Harriet. Ole Golly is preparing to leave New York City, and while Harriet and her nanny share a close bond, Harriet is unsure of her next step. When Harriet's classmates find her journal, it sets off a chain of events that sees her seeing her world from an entirely new perspective, including the relationships with her friends and family. At a time of change and uncertainty, Harriet must find a way to navigate through these challenges and find true friendship and acceptance. As Harriet unravels the truth, she meets new characters, including Roger, the boy across the street, and the four-legged, furry Maeve, who brings a much-needed dose of comic relief with her numerous accidents and antics. The show is a fresh take on the original source material and is meant for children but appeals to both adults and children alike. It is a wonderful family series, bringing humor, intelligence, and warmth to the characters and stories. Beanie Feldstein is captivating as the quirky, humorously sassy, and empathetic Harriet, adding a depth and dimension to the character that resonates with the show's viewers. She portrays Harriet as a curious and adventurous girl who wants to find a place in the world while also remaining true to herself. Lacey Chabert's performance is also noteworthy, as she showcases tremendous range in playing both the heroine and the antagonist in the series. Her character, Marion Hawthorne, drives much of the conflict and tension in the show, but Chabert's performance makes it impossible to hate her. Jane Lynch delivers a fantastic performance as the nurturing, wise, and all-knowing Ole Golly. She acts as the voice of reason in Harriet's life, reassuring her in moments of self-doubt and offering sage advice when she is faced with difficult choices. Overall, Harriet the Spy is a wonderful adaptation that captures the spirit of the original book while delivering a fresh and engaging take on the story. The show is filled with colorful characters, humor, and heart, making it a must-watch for anyone who loves a good coming-of-age story.
