Grown-ish is a spin-off of the popular ABC sitcom Black-ish that premiered on Freeform in January 2018. The show follows Zoey Johnson, the eldest child of the Johnson family, as she navigates her way through college at the fictional California University. Zoey, played by Yara Shahidi, is joined by a diverse group of students who have all left their respective hometowns to attend California University. Among them are Ana Torres (Francia Raisa), Nomi Segal (Emily Arlook), Vivek Shah (Jordan Buhat), Aaron Jackson (Trevor Jackson), and Luca Hall (Luka Sabbat). Each character brings their own unique background, experiences, and personalities to the group dynamic. The show explores the ups and downs of college life, such as dorm room drama, new friendships, relationships, and academic stress. Zoey experiences all of this and more as she struggles to find her identity in a new environment, grapples with her academic workload, and navigates the complexities of love and dating. Of course, it wouldn't be a show without some drama, and Grown-ish has plenty of it. From cheating scandals to family secrets, the show keeps its audience on their toes with intriguing plot twists and turns. However, the tone of the show remains light and comedic, never taking itself too seriously. The show also tackles important social issues such as race, sexuality, and mental health in a way that feels organic and honest. For example, Zoey struggles with the pressure of being the only black student in her marketing class and wonders if her race is the reason for her professor's harsh grading. Ana, on the other hand, confronts her sexuality and comes out to her conservative Cuban parents. In doing so, the show manages to provide a voice for young people who might be struggling with similar issues themselves. One of the show's biggest strengths is its cast of talented young actors. Yara Shahidi, who first debuted as the character of Zoey on Black-ish, carries the show with ease and brings a relatable energy to Zoey's character. Trevor Jackson gives a standout performance as Aaron Jackson, a politically-active student who helps to keep Zoey grounded throughout the series. Francia Raisa as Ana is also a standout, bringing depth to her character's complicated journey. Overall, Grown-ish is a fun and refreshing take on the college genre that presents life as a young adult in a relatable and entertaining way. With its diverse cast and exploration of important social issues, Grown-ish manages to capture the attention of its audience while also giving them something to think about.
