Greenleaf is a drama television series that aired on OWN from 2016 to 2020. The show follows the lives of the Greenleaf family, founders and leaders of the Calvary Fellowship World Ministries, a megachurch in Memphis, Tennessee. However, behind the glitz and glamour of their church lies a web of secrets, lies, and deception. The head of the Greenleaf family is Bishop James Greenleaf, played by Keith David. He is a charismatic and commanding figure who has built his empire on faith and fear. He is married to Lady Mae, played by Lynn Whitfield, who is just as powerful and manipulative as her husband. Together, they have four children: Grace, Jacob, Charity, and Faith. Grace Greenleaf, played by Merle Dandridge, is the eldest daughter of Bishop James and Lady Mae. After leaving the family for over 20 years, Grace returns to Memphis with a mission to expose the church's dark secrets. She is a strong-willed and determined woman who will stop at nothing to get justice for those who have been wronged. Jacob Greenleaf, played by Lamman Rucker, is the middle child and only son of Bishop James and Lady Mae. He is a charming and ambitious man who wants to take over the family business. However, his desire for power often puts him at odds with his family, especially with his sister Grace. Charity Greenleaf, played by Deborah Joy Winans, is the youngest daughter of Bishop James and Lady Mae. She is a talented singer and songwriter who wants nothing more than to follow her dreams. However, her father's expectations and her family's drama often get in the way of her success. Faith Greenleaf, played by Terri Abney, is the youngest child of Bishop James and Lady Mae. She was a victim of sexual abuse by a family friend, which led to her suicide. Her death is the catalyst for Grace's return to Memphis and for the family's secrets to be exposed. Other notable characters in Greenleaf include Kevin Satterlee, played by Tye White, a married man who struggles with his sexuality and his role in the church; Kerissa Greenleaf, played by Kim Hawthorne, Jacob's ambitious wife who wants to be a part of the family's success; and Robert 'Mac' McCready, played by Gregory Alan Williams, Bishop James's brother and a lawyer who always seems to be involved in the family's drama. Greenleaf explores themes of power, corruption, faith, and family. The show portrays the dark side of megachurches, where money and power often corrupt the leaders and turn them away from their original mission. But it also shows the resilience of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness and love. The show received critical acclaim for its strong performances, compelling storylines, and its portrayal of the black church community. It also tackled important social issues, such as sexual abuse, homophobia, and racism. In conclusion, Greenleaf is a must-watch show for those who enjoy thought-provoking dramas with complex characters and intriguing storylines. The show will take you on an emotional journey that will leave you questioning the nature of faith, power, and family.
