Defiance is an American science fiction television series that aired on Syfy for three seasons from 2013 to 2015. The show is set in a post-apocalyptic future where Earth has been transformed by several catastrophic events, including the arrival of seven alien races known as the Votans. The series follows the story of Jeb Nolan (Grant Bowler), a former Marine who becomes the new lawkeeper in the town of Defiance, which was built on the ruins of St. Louis after the war between the humans and the Votans. The premise of the show is that after the Votan ships arrived on Earth seeking a new home, they were met with resistance from the humans. The two sides eventually came to a peace agreement but not before a long and devastating war. During the war, the planet was transformed by terraforming technology that turned much of the landscape into a new and dangerous frontier full of new creatures and hazards. The town of Defiance, built on the ruins of St. Louis, becomes a melting pot of different species and cultures as humans, Votans, and hybrids try to coexist. The show features a diverse cast of characters, including humans, Votans, and hybrids. Jeb Nolan, the protagonist, is a human who was raised by one of the top Votan leaders, known as the Lawkeeper. Julie Benz plays Amanda Rosewater, the mayor of Defiance who is responsible for keeping the peace between the different species. Stephanie Leonidas plays Irisa Nyira, a young Irathient who becomes Nolan's surrogate daughter and partner in battling the many threats to Defiance. Tony Curran plays Datak Tarr, a Castithan who becomes one of the most powerful and influential members of Defiance. Jaime Murray plays Datak's wife, Stahma Tarr, who proves to be a cunning and skilled political operator. Graham Greene plays Rafe McCawley, a human mine owner and prominent member of the town. Mia Kirshner plays Kenya Rosewater, Amanda's sister and owner of the local bar/brothel. Jesse Rath plays Alak Tarr, Datak and Stahma's son, who falls in love with a human girl despite his parents' objections. James Murray plays Niles Pottinger, a powerful and enigmatic E-Rep representative who comes to Defiance and has his own stake in the town's future. Defiance is notable for its world-building, which creates a vivid and realistic sci-fi setting with a lot of history and lore. The show explores the different cultures and societies of the various species, including their religions, traditions, and social structures. It also delves into the politics of Defiance, which is a strategically important town that is coveted by many outside powers. Throughout the series, we see the characters struggle to maintain a fragile peace and deal with various threats to their community, including an outbreak of a deadly disease, a battle with a biologically engineered beast, and a growing conflict with the fascist Earth Republic government. The show also features a lot of action and adventure, with each episode containing exciting set pieces and tense conflict. There are many memorable scenes, such as Nolan and Irisa's showdown with an Indogene scientist in the pilot episode, Datak Tarr's violent coup against the McCawley family, and a high-speed chase through the Defiance mines in season two. The special effects are also impressive, with many of the alien creatures and landscapes looking realistic and detailed. Overall, Defiance is an engaging and entertaining sci-fi series that combines action, adventure, and drama with a richly imagined world and memorable characters. Its unique setting and diverse cast make it an appealing choice for fans of the genre, while its strong storytelling and well-executed action sequences make it a compelling watch for any sci-fi fan.
