Deadhouse Dark is an Australian horror anthology series that premiered on Shudder in 2020. It is the brainchild of director and writer Enzo Tedeschi, who was previously behind the critically acclaimed horror film The Tunnel. The show is comprised of six episodes, each of which is around 20 minutes long, with a different director and cast for each episode. The premise of Deadhouse Dark is simple: a young woman named Holly (Gemma Bird Matheson) has been abducted by a mysterious figure and forced to wander through a series of interconnected haunted houses. Each of the subsequent episodes is set in one of these houses, and features a different cast of characters dealing with supernatural horrors. The first episode, titled "Blackwood's Baby," is directed by Enzo Tedeschi himself, and stars Nicholas Hope (best known for his role in the movie Bad Boy Bubby) as a grizzled caretaker named Felix who is tasked with looking after a haunted dollhouse. This episode is a slow burn, building tension and dread as Felix uncovers the disturbing history of the dollhouse and its previous inhabitants. The second episode, "The Offering," is directed by Paul Gerard Kennedy and stars Naomi Sequeira (known for her work on Disney Channel) as a young woman named Maya who is tasked with performing a ritual to appease a supernatural entity. This episode is a tense and atmospheric slow burn that gradually ramps up the horror as Maya begins to realize the true nature of the ritual. The third episode, "Cam Girls," is directed by Enzo Tedeschi again, and stars Alexandra Apolloni and Lauren Orrell as two young women who decide to start a webcam sex show from a haunted house. This episode is a blend of horror and dark comedy, with some genuinely creepy moments mixed in with some absurdly funny ones. The fourth episode, "A Grave Too Deep," is directed by Chris Sun and stars Zoe Hatz as a young woman named Nadia who is searching for her missing sister. Nadia ends up in a graveyard where she is confronted with a vengeful ghost. This episode is a fast-paced and action-packed thrill ride, with some genuinely creepy moments and a good dose of jump scares. The fifth episode, "The Curse of the Mummy," is directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner and stars Sam Delich and Jessica Fallico as two archaeologists who accidentally awaken an ancient mummy. This episode is a fun and campy throwback to classic monster movies, with some genuinely creepy moments mixed in with some over-the-top humor. The final episode, "Séance," is directed by Denai Gracie and stars Clair Van Der Boom as a young woman named Tilly who attends a séance held in a haunted house. This episode is a slow burn that builds tension and dread as the séance participants begin to realize that they might not be alone in the house. Overall, Deadhouse Dark is a solid horror anthology that is well worth checking out for fans of the genre. Each episode has its own unique flair and style, and the overarching narrative of Holly's abduction and journey through the haunted houses ties everything together nicely. The show is not without its flaws (some episodes are stronger than others, and the acting can be hit or miss at times), but it is still an enjoyable and chilling watch.
