Deadbeat is a supernatural comedy series produced by Hulu Originals. The show follows the life of Kevin Pacalioglu, a stoner medium who helps ghosts with their unfinished business so they can move on to the afterlife. With a blend of sarcasm and wit, Deadbeat delivers a hilarious take on the concept of life beyond death. The star of the show, Tyler Labine, plays the role of Kevin, a lazy, down-on-his-luck medium who moonlights as a taxi driver to make ends meet. Kevin sees dead people and helps them to complete their last wishes, but he's not exactly enthusiastic about his job. Instead of being a beacon of hope for the dead, he uses his abilities to try and make a quick buck, much to the annoyance of the ghosts he encounters. Lucy DeVito plays Sue, Kevin's best friend and confidant. Sue is a single mom who manages a nearby coffee shop and often provides Kevin with sarcastic advice. She is Kevin’s closest ally and helps him in his quest to help the ghosts. Brandon T. Jackson co-stars as the street-smart Camomile, who is also a medium. While Camomile is nothing like Kevin, the two soon become frenemies, and they often team up to help ghosts. They have different styles, but they genuinely care for each other and go out of their way to help. The Ghosts are the show's highlight, and each episode focuses on a new ghost Who needs Kevin's help. The deceased characters range from tragic and lovelorn to vengeful and angry. Every encounter is unique and requires Kevin to use his street smarts and supernatural abilities to solve the ghosts' problems. One of the show's unique features is how it showcases the ghosts' backstories. While most supernatural shows focus on the main character's life after they return as ghosts, Deadbeat flips the script by exploring the ghosts' lives before they died. The show's creators use flashbacks to reveal the ghosts' stories and bring depth to their characters. These backstories create a whole new level of empathy and sympathy from the audience, which helps in the show's comedic moments. Deadbeat's comedic approach to the supernatural genre is refreshing, and every episode provides ample time for jokes and one-liners. While the show takes on a supernatural element, it maintains a strong focus on comedy and making viewers laugh. The series was directed by Troy Miller, whose previous work includes some successful TV shows like Arrested Development, Flight of the Conchords, and The Neighborhood. His touch is evident in the show's unique camera angles and quick-witted pursuits. Overall, Deadbeat is a hilarious and enjoyable show that explores the supernatural realm in a unique and humorous way. The show effectively captures the struggles of ordinary people trying to navigate life and death, and the hilarious disasters that can happen when a slacker medium gets involved. Deadbeat's blend of supernatural and comedic elements makes it a must-watch for fans of both genres.
