City Hunter is a thrilling action-packed Korean drama that aired in 2011, starring Lee Min-Ho, Park Min-Young, and Sang-Jung Kim. It is a loose adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo's popular manga series of the same name. The show follows the story of Lee Yoon-Sung, a brilliant MIT-educated specialist and computer whizz, who works at the Blue House (the Korean version of the White House) National Communication Network Team. Lee Yoon-Sung's primary objective is to seek and destroy the corrupt politicians who ruined his father's life and reputation. The show begins with an intense and emotional flashback of Lee Yoon-Sung's childhood as he saw his father, Lee Jin-Pyo, betrayed and left for dead by a group of high-ranking officials. Years later, Jin-Pyo reappears, telling Yoon-Sung that the officials' betrayal has led to his father's death. He then reveals to his son that he had a staged a deal with the Golden Triangle Secret Society to smuggle opium in exchange for getting revenge on those corrupt officials who destroyed his family. After his initial hesitation and refusal, Lee Yoon-Sung learns of his father's true intentions to use him to bring the corrupt officials down, rather than to follow his father's path of a vigilante. Yoon-Sung, being an intelligent and dedicated worker, decides to utilize his technical skills and the latest technology to help him bring the corrupt politicians to justice without anyone's knowledge, hiding under the alter ego of "City Hunter." Through City Hunter's heroic actions, he gains the attention of the president of the Blue House, and Yoon-Sung is assigned to assist Kim Na-na, an excellent martial arts fighter with an impressive record and a very strong sense of duty. Kim Na-na is often called on to join the City Hunter in his heroic duties, and together they become a formidable team fighting against the evil of the corrupt officials. As Lee Yoon-Sung, the assistant to the Blue House, a variety of other characters make their impactful entry into the story. Prosecutor Kim Young-ju and the president's chief of staff also create their respective roles in the fight between the forces of good and evil. As Yoon-Sung becomes aware of who is trustworthy and who isn't in his quest for justice, his enemies continue to try and discover who is the City Hunter and put an end to him. City Hunter is a fascinating, fast-paced show filled with action, adventure, drama and romance. The production and costume designs are top-notch - the show's authenticity is enhanced by the splendid portrayal of the Blue House and the various outdoor locations in Seoul. The brilliant cinematography elevates the excitement level of every action sequence, and the actors' performances bring depth and sentimentality to each of their characters. Lee Min-Ho's performance as Lee Yoon-Sung is persuasive and captivating. He successfully portrays the dynamic struggle between his character's mission for retribution and his love for the brave Kim Na-na, played by Park Min-Young, whose active role sharpens the narrative. Together they form the show's romantic bond, enhancing its emotional depth and edge. The show also features a brilliant soundtrack, which matches the tone and pace of every scene in City Hunter, enhancing the viewers' experience. The opening theme song "It's Alright" by Yang Hwa Jin is especially catchy, and fans of the show will find themselves humming to it during non-viewing hours. Overall, City Hunter is an incredibly well-crafted show, with well-written plot twists, dynamic characters and highly engaging story arcs. From the first episode until the last, it captures the viewers' attention and provides a highly satisfying conclusion to its story.
