Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail is a thrilling anime series from FUNimation that follows the story of a former Colombian guerrilla soldier named Roberta, who seeks revenge against those who have wronged her. The series is a spin-off of the main Black Lagoon anime, and it consists of five episodes that were released between July 2010 and June 2011. The show revolves around the Lagoon Company, a group of mercenaries who operate in the fictional city of Roanapur, Thailand. The group is led by Dutch, a former U.S. Marine, and consists of the dual-wielding Revy, the hacker Benny, and the former child soldier Rock. In this series, they find themselves caught in the crosshairs of Roberta, who has returned to Roanapur to seek revenge against the U.S. government and a group of CIA operatives who have betrayed her. The series opens with a prologue that explains Roberta's background as a member of the FARC, a left-wing Colombian guerrilla group. After a failed mission, Roberta is taken in by an American diplomat named Diego Lovelace, who becomes her surrogate father figure. Roberta eventually leaves the FARC and becomes a maid for the Lovelace family in Roanapur. However, when Diego is assassinated by the CIA, Roberta's world is shattered. She sets out on a mission of revenge, determined to take down those responsible for Diego's death. This mission inevitably brings her into conflict with the Lagoon Company, who find themselves caught in the crossfire. The series is a mix of action, drama, and political intrigue, with plenty of memorable characters and pulse-pounding setpieces. Brian Drummond provides the voice of Dutch, the Lagoon Company's stoic leader, while Hiroaki Hirata brings plenty of energy to the role of Benny, the group's tech whiz. Kiyoyuki Yanada is perfectly cast as the Russian mob boss Balalaika, while Houko Kuwashima imbues Roberta with equal parts strength and vulnerability. Omi Minami also shines as Fabiola, a young Mexican nun who becomes embroiled in the conflict between Roberta and the Lagoon Company. Tsutomu Isobe is memorable as Chinatsu, a CIA operative who plays a key role in the series' plot. Maryke Hendrikse rounds out the cast as Revy, the Lagoon Company's foul-mouthed and trigger-happy gunfighter. The series' animation is top-notch, with plenty of dynamic action sequences and detailed character designs. The show also features a memorable soundtrack, with a mix of rock and electronic music that perfectly complements the on-screen action. Overall, Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail is a must-watch for fans of the original series, as well as anyone who enjoys fast-paced action and compelling characters. It's a fitting addition to the Black Lagoon franchise, with plenty of surprises and twists that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
