Army Wives, a Lifetime drama that airs on Sunday nights, is an exceptional and unique glance into the challenges and difficulties that meet the other half of every Army unit: the wives who stay at home. Set on a fictional Army base, Army Wives follows the lives of a handful of women, and one very patient man, who must deal with gossip, intrigue, drama, and tragedy while their spouses risk their lives. While the series has been criticized in the past for failing to accurately portray the lives of these important individuals, real Army wives and other military spouses have applauded the show for giving credit where credit is due. Regardless of the differing views, Army Wives is an entertaining show that provides colorful characters, and audiences across the nation are falling in love with these women and their respect for husband and country. The main characters in Army Wives are Claudia Joy, the general's wife; her best friend, Denise; a spunky Private's wife, Roxy; and the psychologist husband of an Army Lieutenant Colonel, Roland. These four become quick friends in the show's opening episode. Throughout the series, the four will face trauma and tragedy of all kinds. From deployed spouses to children killed in action, lost jobs to family arguments, and missed political opportunities to tragic health problems, the characters in Army Wives must deal with just as much pain and heartache as their spouses in the field. Army Wives, of course, is not without comic relief. The easy dialogue and comic situations give viewers the chance to breathe between dramatic events. Comedic moments often come from the tumultuous relationship of Roxy and her husband, Trevor. These two characters, residing at the lower end of the Army totem pole, struggle to put a broken family back together. Roxy's spur-of-the-moment impetuousness is often exasperating to her husband, but their intense love for each other sees them through difficult times. The rock of the group, Denise Sherwood, is a Major's wife. One of the most beloved characters on the show, Denise is kind and gentle. She offers wise words to her friends while simultaneously dealing with a strict husband and an angry son. In a later season, the death of Denise's son would threaten to derail her. Only through the support of her fellow Army wives and patient husband would Denise find absolution. Army Wives promises to be a continuing reminder of the patience and patriotism of the spouses of our Armed Forces members.
