APB is an American television drama series created by Matt Nix, starring Justin Kirk, Natalie Martinez, and Taylor Handley. The show premiered on FOX in February 2017 and ran for one season before being cancelled. Based on true events, APB follows Gideon Reeves (Kirk), a billionaire tech innovator who takes over a Chicago police district after his best friend is murdered. Reeves is a genius inventor who made his fortune developing cutting-edge technology. When he witnesses his friend's murder, he comes to the realization that the police department is ill-equipped to keep up with the rapidly evolving world of crime. Eager to make a change, Reeves takes control of the district, promising to overhaul the department with the most advanced technology available. Reeves introduces a state-of-the-art communication system that allows people to report crimes instantly and gives the police access to real-time surveillance. Also, he creates an app that uses facial recognition to identify criminals on the street and sends cops digital dossiers on the suspects. Reeves believes that with the help of technology, they can solve crimes more efficiently. Detective Theresa Murphy (Martinez), the head of the department's robbery/homicide division, is skeptical of Reeves' approach. She sees his technology as intrusive and impersonal. However, she soon realizes that it has its advantages when they use it to solve a case that could not have been solved using traditional police tactics. Meanwhile, officer Nicholas Brandt (Handley) has his own problems. He is struggling with his partner's injury, which has left him traumatized, and his gambling addiction, which puts his job and life in jeopardy. Brandt's character arc is one of the most compelling in the show. We see him go from a washed-up cop to a respected officer who takes pride in his job. The dynamic between Reeves, Murphy, and Brandt is the backbone of the show. It is engaging to see the three leads work together, even though they have different perspectives. As they solve crimes together, they form a bond that transcends their initial disagreements. The show is full of action and suspense. Each episode sees the team investigate a new case, but there is also an overarching storyline of corruption within the police department. The show balances the two aspects well. The cases are intriguing, and the ongoing story is compelling. APB is impressive for its innovative use of technology. The show offers a glimpse of how technology could be used to fight crime in the future. The gadgets and systems they create are incredibly fascinating. The show has a cinematic quality to it, with the use of drone shots and slow-motion sequences that make it visually stunning. The show also explores the ethics of using technology to fight crime. It raises questions about surveillance and privacy, as well as what happens when technology fails. Many of the cases they investigate involve some kind of technology malfunction, which ultimately leads to a failure in solving the crime. Overall, APB is an entertaining crime drama that delivers on action, suspense, and innovation. The show's strength is in its characters, who are well developed, and the relationships they form with each other. While it only lasted one season, it still has a lot to offer, and it is a shame it did not have the longevity it deserved.
