Amazing Stories is an anthology series on Apple TV+ created by Steven Spielberg, who also executive produced the series alongside many other Hollywood names, such as Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, and more. The show features different stories with a mix of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and drama elements, where each episode has a different plot, cast, and director. The theme of the show is inspired by Spielberg's previous work with the same title in the 1980s. The first season of Amazing Stories premiered on March 6, 2020, consisting of five episodes with a runtime of approximately 45 minutes, except for one extended episode that is about an hour long. The series stars various renowned actors such as Dylan O'Brien, Robert Forster, Austin Stowell, Victoria Pedretti, Kerry Bishé, Elizabeth Marvel, and more, along with some fresh faces. The first episode, named "The Cellar," serves as an intriguing introduction to the show. The plot revolves around a man named Sam, portrayed by Dylan O'Brien, who is trying to fix up his late grandfather's house to sell it. As he searches the property, he discovers a hidden room in the basement with a mysterious ladder that leads to an unknown void. Curiosity gets the best of him, and he starts to explore the unexplored space with unexpected consequences. The second episode, titled "The Heat," follows a newlywed couple, played by Kerry Bishé and Brenton Thwaites, whose love is put to the test when their life is threatened by wildfire in the wilderness. They must brave the flames by risking their lives to save each other and their house. In the third episode, "Dynoman and the Volt," an introverted comic book writer named Joe, played by Chris Diamantopoulos, gets sucked into his own story, where he becomes his superhero creation, the Dynoman, and fights off the villainous Volt, played by Mark Silverman. The episode genre is a mix of superhero, comedy, and action taken from classic comics. The fourth episode, named "Signs of Life," narrates the story of a grieving father, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, whose late daughter continues to communicate with him through electronic gadgets after her tragic death. He struggles to figure out what his daughter wants from him and how to move on. The final episode, "The Rift," takes the viewers on a magical journey to the past with the help of a mysterious portal in the woods discovered by two boys, Jack Gore and Sasha Alexander. The portal takes them back to the time where a medieval soldier, played by Austin Stowell, is fighting a dragon, and they must find a way to help him defeat the beast. Overall, Amazing Stories is a well-executed anthology series with a good mix of drama, horror, fantasy, and sci-fi stories where each episode is self-contained and tells twisted and unique tales. The show is not afraid to take risks with some emotional storytelling that may give the viewers an opportunity to learn ethical values through its engaging stories.
