A.P. Bio is an American sitcom that premiered on NBC on February 1, 2018, and ended on June 3, 2021, after four seasons. The show stars Glenn Howerton as Jack Griffin, a Harvard philosophy professor who loses his job and is forced to return to his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, where he takes a job as a high school Advanced Placement (AP) biology teacher. The show is set in Whitlock High School, where Jack is assigned to teach a class of students who are determined to excel despite his lack of interest in actually teaching them. Instead, Jack uses his classroom as a place to plan his revenge against his rival, Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett), who stole his dream job at Stanford University. Helping Jack in his scheme is the school's principal, Ralph Durbin (Patton Oswalt), who is desperate to keep his job and keep the school from falling apart. Also working with Jack are fellow teachers Mary Wagner (Mary Sohn), Michelle Jones (Jean Villepique), and Stef Duncan (Lyric Lewis), and one of Jack's students, Sarika Sarkar (Aparna Brielle). Throughout the show's four seasons, Jack's schemes and plans become increasingly wild and ridiculous, often involving his students in dangerous and illegal activities. However, the show's heart comes from the relationship between Jack and his students, as he slowly begins to care about their lives and futures and starts to teach them meaningful lessons. One of the show's strengths is its cast, who all deliver hilarious performances. Glenn Howerton, better known for his role in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, brings his trademark snarky humor to Jack, making him a loveable and hateable antihero. Patton Oswalt is perfectly cast as the hapless principal, and Mary Sohn, Jean Villepique, and Lyric Lewis round out the supporting cast with their unique personalities. The show's writing is fast-paced, witty, and full of surprises, with each episode featuring plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. While some of the show's jokes and storylines can be a bit controversial or edgy, the show never crosses the line into being offensive or mean-spirited. Another great aspect of A.P. Bio is its use of pop culture references and quirky side characters. Each episode is packed with clever nods to movies, TV shows, and music, as well as bizarre cameos from familiar faces like Fred Willard and Nick Offerman. Overall, A.P. Bio is a hilarious and heartwarming show that offers a fresh take on the high school comedy genre. While it may not be the most realistic depiction of a school or a teacher, it's impossible not to enjoy the antics and adventures of Jack and his students. The show offers a great mix of humor, heart, and satire, and it's definitely worth checking out.
