Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a science fiction action film that was released in 2014. This movie, which stars Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, and Andy Serkis, is a sequel to the 2011 movie, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The story takes place ten years after the events of the first movie, where a deadly virus had been unleashed, killing most of humanity. This virus had been created in a lab, under the guise of curing Alzheimer's disease, but unforeseen consequences resulted in the virus' release. The apes that were experimented on had gained intelligence and had escaped their captivity, and had since moved beyond human control. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the apes have created their own society in the forests outside of San Francisco. They have their own language and own rules, and their leader, Caesar (played by Andy Serkis), is highly intelligent and an excellent strategist. The remaining humans on earth have set up a colony in San Francisco, within the safety of a walled community. However, the humans have run out of fuel and need to restart a hydroelectric dam to keep their colony powered. This dam is located in the apes' territory, and the humans must work with the apes in order to get the dam working again. The human colony is led by Dreyfus (played by Gary Oldman), who is skeptical of the apes and their intelligence. Malcolm (played by Jason Clarke) is one of the humans who is tasked with visiting the apes in order to negotiate the use of the dam. Malcolm's interactions with the apes reveal that Caesar is a highly intelligent and peaceful leader, who is willing to work with humans to ensure the safety of his own kind. Meanwhile, Keri Russell plays Ellie, a veterinarian who is helping humans and apes alike in San Francisco. She has a soft spot for Caesar, who had saved her life in the past. As the humans and apes work together, tensions rise between some of the apes and humans. Dreyfus becomes increasingly aggressive towards the apes, and some of the apes become distrustful of humans. The uneasy truce between the two groups falls apart, resulting in a battle for dominance. The movie is a stunning visual spectacle, with the apes rendered using motion capture technology. This allows for the apes to have incredibly life-like movements and expressions, making it easy to forget that they are not actually on screen. The movie provides an interesting commentary on the relationship between humans and nature, and what happens when humanity tries to control that which is beyond their control. Overall, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a thrilling movie that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. The story is engaging, the characters are well-developed, and the special effects are absolutely stunning. For anyone who loves science fiction or action movies, this is definitely one to watch.
