Missing Link is a 2019 animated adventure-comedy film produced by Laika, the studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings. The movie follows Sir Lionel Frost (voiced by Hugh Jackman), a fearless explorer who craves recognition from the elite members of Victorian society. Despite being scoffed at by his peers, Sir Lionel is determined to prove his worth by discovering a legendary creature that is rumored to exist in the Pacific Northwest. One day, he receives a letter from someone claiming to have proof of the creature's existence. Excited at the prospect of finally being recognized as a credible explorer, Sir Lionel travels to the Pacific Northwest only to discover that the letter was sent by the creature himself - a friendly, articulate, and intelligent Sasquatch named Mr. Link (voiced by Zach Galifianakis). Mr. Link reveals that he is the last of his kind and is lonely, so he seeks Sir Lionel's help in finding more of his kind so that he can find a community and avoid being alone forever. Sir Lionel agrees to help Mr. Link, and the two embark on a journey to find the hidden valley of Shangri-La, where Mr. Link believes his relatives reside. Along the way, they meet Adelina Fortnight (voiced by Zoe Saldana), an independent and adventurous widow who agrees to let them use her airship to travel to the Himalayas, where Shangri-La is said to be located. Together, the trio faces challenges and obstacles, including evading a villainous explorer named Willard Stenk (voiced by Timothy Olyphant), who is determined to capture Mr. Link for his own profit. The film's animation is incredibly detailed and visually stunning. The characters are meticulously crafted with distinct personalities, and the environments are vivid and full of life. The film has a charming and whimsical tone, with humorous dialogue and witty banter between the characters. Missing Link incorporates themes of friendship, acceptance, and the importance of finding one's place in the world. It also touches on deeper themes of colonialism and imperialism, as Sir Lionel struggles with the notion that he may be exploiting Mr. Link for his own gain. The voice acting is excellent, with Hugh Jackman delivering a charismatic and charming performance as Sir Lionel. Zach Galifianakis brings a unique and endearing quality to Mr. Link, capturing both his childlike wonder and his intelligence. Zoe Saldana's Adelina is tough and resourceful, providing a strong female character who is more than capable of handling herself in the face of danger. David Walliams and Stephen Fry also provide excellent voice work as minor characters, adding to the film's comedic moments.
