Twilight, which was released in 1998 and should not be confused with other films of the same name, is a film-noir and thriller hybrid starring Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, and Susan Sarandon. It was written and directed by Robert Benton, released in March, and is ninety-six minutes long. The story centers on Harry Ross, played by Newman, who is a retired ex-policeman and private detective who stumbles upon a twenty-year-old case involving his friend Jack Ames', played by Hackman's, wife's former acquaintance. Ross must unravel the mystery while tiptoeing around his friendship with Catherine Ames, played by Sarandon, who is married to Jack, and avoid causing unnecessary damage to his friend while Jack suffers from an illness. The film was greeted with mixed reviews from critics. Despite admirable performances from its three stars, the film was criticized for its pacing. However, Newman and Hackman's performances were noted by most critics as exceptional.
