A Walk in the Clouds takes place shortly after the second World War, when a soldier named Paul returns home to his wife. Paul is troubled after the war itself, and he returns to a woman who feels distant and uncaring to him. In an effort to re-enter normal life, Paul takes a job selling chocolates door to door and heads down to Sacramento. On the bus to Sacramento, Paul meets the beautiful young student Victoria. Victoria, he learns, is pregnant after an affair with her professor. She dreads going home to face her very traditional family, and in sympathy, Paul offers to accompany her as her husband and to then slip away. Victoria’s father is at first furious because Victoria has seemingly married without her family’s consent and to a man they consider to be beneath her. For his part, Paul intends to slip away early on, leaving her family to believe her abandoned rather than promiscuous, but he finds himself drawn to the traditions of her family and the love they share. Paul himself is an orphan and has never before encountered the roots and love that her family holds for its members. As time goes on, Paul finds it more and more difficult to leave. Not only is the family bringing him in as one of their own, he is falling more and more deeply in love with Victoria herself. Her beauty and her spirit entrance him, but because he is married, he resists his attraction to her. The romance between the two grows and grows, making Paul and Victoria even more uncertain about what their lives might be apart and what it could be together. Walk in the Clouds received highly mixed reviews in that it was both praised for its languid pace and lush cinematography and marked down for what some reviewers perceived as melodrama. The film did win a Golden Globe award for the Best Original Score.
