Noticing her unique vocal style, Ike decides to start mentoring Anna Mae. The two form a romantic relationship after Anna moves in with Ike. They soon marry, and Anna becomes Tina Turner. The duo begins a successful music carrier. All things aren't wonderful in Tina's world. As the fame grows, Ike begins having affairs and using drugs. Not satisfied with his loss of musical inspiration, he blames the lack of new music on Tina. Constantly intoxicated, Ike starts beating and raping Tina. As most wives of that time, Tina believes that the problems are her fault and stays to help raise their children. Upset and depressed over her life, Tina ends up overdosing on medication and almost dies on stage. After working with a friend to use religion and meditation to center her life, Tina finally has enough. One night on the way to a hotel for a concert, Tina and Ike fight in the back of the limo, and Tina fights back. When Ike falls asleep after the encounter, Tina leaves the hotel and Ike for good. A divorce hearing is held in which Tina asks only to retain the use of her stage name so that she may continue to pursue her carrier. The judge grants her wish, and Tina begins work as a solo music artist.
